Default Newark's downtown facades shed 'tacky' look with new sign rules

Thank goodness they are doing something, Newark needs help and a face-lift is a start.

Does the facade face lift stop people from shooting one another?

Sad but true, there needs to be a cultural revolution of sorts in Newark for any real progress to be made.

If Newark would just focus on one section at a time and concentrate their efforts, similar to what was done in JC, I think they have more success. That success could then begin changing the mentality of the outlying areas of the city's residents. I think they tried this with the Ironbound section of the city, but just couldn't get it done to where an out of towner from say the burbs would feel comfortable walking the streets.

No doubt, Newark is one of the scariest places in America.

I don't understand how JC and Hoboken can have such dramatic turn arounds, yet Newark is still an incredibly dangerous place, ugly, nasty place.

Newark is crazy frightening. I won't even pass-through without the windows up and doors locked.

The Ironbound isn't that bad, but it has regressed since the Real Estate boom ended.

Newark has potential, but I just don't see a turn around in sight.

I hope I am wrong as Newark is not my city and my knowledge is somewhat limited.

I can say one thing, the taxes in Essex should get you more.

They should put a fence around downtown and the Ironbund, complete with barbed wire and armed guards.

Something similar to the wall separating East and West Germany post WWII.

You've gotta love the use of the word "tacky". Disheveled, rundown, or my personal favorite Beirut'ish, may be better choices, but what do I know.
